Additionally, while area of specialization is open, the letter of application should make clear how the applicant understands their area(s) of specialization make them well suited to the department.

The successful candidate is expected to have a record of academic leadership and excellence in teaching and research, be prepared to contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs, and have an active research program. The new head of department will be able to play a key role in the growth and future direction of the department with commitments to equitable leadership, support of diverse careers as well as diversity and inclusion in the field of Sociology, and a commitment to supporting Indigenization, decolonization, and anti-racism. 

The term of office for Head is three years, and normally renewable once following review. The successful candidate will return to a faculty position in the Department of Sociology after their headship period ends.
